So I stuck with the more basic recipes in this but still found this immensely helpful. I knew nothing about "stewing" fruit, and I had no idea that you could puree meat in a blender. This book includes tips on how to peel, mash and/or cook fruits, what you can introduce at what age, what items freeze well, and a little bit on nutritional contents. It gives you ideas on what foods make a tasty combo in the blender. I never tried my creations (I didn't want my daughter seeing me make a face if I didn't like it). However, my daughter liked every single creation I made from the book. Using this recipe book gave me confidence with trying some of my own concoctions and helped me stay on track with exposing my youngster to a variety of foods early on. There is an index in the back-- one of my favorite features. I used this the most during the 6 to 10 month phase. I also recommend having two of Annabel Karmel's silicone baby food freezer trays-- or something similar. I froze food in the trays and then popped the cubes of frozen food into quart-size or gallon-size ziplock bags and labeld and dated them. I own a blender, nothing fancing, and that worked fine.
I used this book when I was making food for my now 11 year old son and I was so happy to find the same book when it was time for the little one to start on solids. It has a good guideline of when to start introducing solids and what you should try first. The recipes in this book actually taste like real meals and have combinations of food that make sense together. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that is looking for a simple, informative guide to making baby food.
I purchased this book as a first time mom. I do a mix between purees and BLW. I went to my daughter's 9m appointment yesterday and had her hemoglobin tested. My pediatrician said "she has never seen an exclusive breastfed baby have such great hemoglobin results." I owe it to this book and making the meat purees that gave her the iron she needs to thrive. My daughter loved most of the recipes in this book and to be able to make them in large batches has saved me time.
This is one of two baby cookbooks that I own, but this is by far the best. The recipes are organized by age group, but even more helpful is an index in the back for recipes that use a specific ingredient. I've used this numerous times when I've forgotten to pull food out of the freezer and need to make my son food based on the ingredients I have. There's also a section based solely on no-cook purees! The book also contains lots of useful information on things like weaning and food allergies. As a first-time mother I found all of the information extremely helpful. Once you start moving up in stages it also recommends how many servings of starches, vegetables, etc. your baby should be consuming. The recipes themselves are easy to follow with specific instructions for everything ranging from peeling tomatoes to making your own vegetable and chicken stock. Each recipe also comes with an estimated cooking time, whether or not it is suitable for freezing and the number of portions the recipe will make.I also taste everything before I feed it to my son and so far, it's all been very good!
We have purchased this book many times. I used it to feed my own kid when he was about seven months or so; and our whole family enjoyed the recipes. My kid (who is now five) now has the widest taste range of any kids his age I know. He gets excited about broccoli and beans and carrots and peas and just about any other vegetable, and I am sure a lot of it has to do with introducing him to real food at that crucial time (7-9 months or so) when babies start to develop their taste buds. We now buy this book for all our friends whenever they have their first child.
Before purchasing this book I actually checked out several of the top reviewed baby puree recipe books from the library so I could decide which one was the best fit for my needs. I liked this one because the recipes were simple and nicely split by age suitability. Plus the pictures were nice. I give it four stars because it would be nice to have a sample menu by age like I saw in at least one book and I find that since I am making these in bulk and freezing, it's easier to just make say peas and sweat potatoes separately and then giving him one of each (I freeze them in ice-cube tray sized portions) for a meal instead of making a recipe containing peas and sweet potatoes mixed together. That said, I've made several of the recipes and so far my son seems to enjoy them. It's also expanded my horizons. If not for the book I know I wouldn't have made rutabaga that's for sure!
If anyone is on the fence about making vs. buying their baby food... DEFINITELY make it yourself. I didn't buy any of the fancy baby food systems, I use a veggie steamer and food processor that I already own and it works exactly the same. It is soooo much cheaper than the processed stuff on the shelf filled with preservatives, and I use organic food! This is a great beginners book for baby purees. Easy recipes, food/nutrition facts, and feeding guidelines by age (though my pediatrician is a little conservative compared to this book as to when to introduce berries). The ONLY reason this did not get 5 stars is I was somewhat surprised (and disappointed) the author did not include spices that mix well with the veggies. My baby loves cumin and nutmeg and cinnamon with her veggies, and I thought this book would include at least some suggestions for what spices could be used. But other than that, it is a really great book and I would recommend buying.
I've been making recipes from this book for our 7 month old for about two months now, and they're super easy. I like that she helps make it easy and approachable to make baby food rather than buying the pre-made products with preservatives, sugar, etc. in them. I also look forward to being able to step him up to new foods and textures as he grows with the guidance from this book. I definitely recommend picking up a copy if you're looking to do DIY baby food, hope it helps!
