Tananarive Due tells a great tale in seemingly effortless prose. I was hooked from the instant I started reading The Good House. Due is also a minute observer of human psychology and all of her characters have depth and truth. Quite a feat for a genre usually dismissed as pulp, but like the pulp of yore there is far more than pulp here.We open with a prologue in the past which gives a clue as to how the house/land came to be haunted. Then, in the present, Angela Touissant has returned to the house she inherited from her grandmother in rural Washington State with her rebellious teenage son and her semi-estranged ex-husband. All seems to be going well and Angela decides to give a party for the tight-knit community. But, it seems that the baka or demon that Angela's grandmother awoke is on a schedule and it mut either be put to rest for good or arise this summer. Angela's grandmother, an accomplished Yoruba/voudon priestess left pieces of her spirit available to help Angela put the baka to rest, even though Marie protected Angela from any knowledge of her family's history with voudon when she was alive.Well, of course things don't work out as intended and of course the baka is awoken and causing destruction and Angela must figure out how to fight it. The mechanics of the haunted house plot are pretty standard here, it is the characters, the writing, the psychological insight and the portrait of voudon for both light and dark that set this book above its competitors. Recommended for those who like a good haunted house story or a good family saga.
The author continues to put out a great riveting story when it comes to uncanny activities. Sacajawea, Washington is the foundation for an exciting, ghostly narrative, with absorbing, genuine and well defined characters, and the fusion of African and Native American narratives. Protagonist, Angela Toussaint has claimed her grandmother’s house, which the residents believe have healing powers, but when tragedy strikes at a Fourth of July party, Angela leaves but returns two years later seeking answers as to what really led up to that horrific incident. Confronted with secrets, ghostly episodes, fatalities and paranormal activities, she will have to come to terms with a shocking revelation, along with a deadly showdown. I am looking forward to seeing this fantastic story made into a play or movie.
I stumbled across this book about three or four years ago, when I was living in the Tacoma Washington area. The local branch of the Pierce County Library had set it out on the shelf so that the cover would catch your eye, and I checked it out and read it. I was not familiar with the author, but this turned out to be a very, very good book. In fact, I liked it so much that I just bought it from Amazon so that I would have it in my personal library. It is a horror novel, but one that is very well done. I love the way the story unfolds, the build-up, etc. I also got a kick out of the fact that the story was set in Washington state and I read it while I was out there (have since relocated to Delaware). This book is a few years old, but the good thing about well-written fiction is that it tends to hold up better than non-fiction as the years pass. If you like horror books, give this a try. I'm glad I did.
~THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS~I was hesitant to read this book because I have a severe allergy to cheesiness. However, I was pleasantly surprised. I expected a typical New Orleans setting with over the top voodoo rituals and chants. I got none of that. Instead, I got a story filled with twists and turns without the over-the-top gore. It's a psychological piece that makes you think throughout the entire novel. I like books like that because I can read them several times and discover something new with each read. Due intertwined several stories and made them fit into each other without missing a beat. I loved the way she wove Gramma Marie's background into the story with flashbacks and a single manuscript found in a closet. The author wrote a captivating piece without misplaced sex scenes and violence to keep it going. KUDOS!I did find the different point of views a bit confusing. One minute you're reading in the present and the next you're reading about something that happened two years ago. I had to read three chapters twice. I'm an avid animal lover so I couldn't embrace the treatment of Onyx..sorry but I love dogs. However, it fit. It may have been intentional on Due's part, but I didn't like any of the characters. Not because of the writing, but their characteristics made them rather annoying. The best character, Naomi, didn't have much of a role in the novel. Yet, she was the more well-rounded character. Angela was, in my opinion, rather naive. Her actions were typical. An Tariq was so despicable, I found myself hoping he'd get hit by a large vehicle. Well done, Mrs. Due.Overall, this is a piece that I will read again.
