Too many science fiction novels focus on the whiz-bang special effects, and then rely on stock characters with crystal-clear good / bad alignments. Fortunately, Moren's story is free of this defect: characters on all sides of the political & cultural divides in the novel are a blend of good and bad (and indifferent), giving the novel a healthy and welcome dose of reality.Not that there aren't some whiz-bang battles and high-tech gadgets within. Moren drops hints along the way about the super-secret technology that will change the galaxy, and the opening and closing battles in particular provide plenty of action. Spy thriller fans will rejoice in the presence of one Simon Kovalic and his sidekicks, as they track down missing operatives and shadowy Caledonian provacateurs. But it's the internal and interpersonal journeys that are the novel's real strength. Political, cultural, and family alliances shift in a lifelike--and sometimes heartbreaking--way.There was a distinct lack of estrogen in this universe, though--where are the major women characters? Here's hoping this oversight will be corrected in future excursions to this part of the galaxy.Finally: a note on the audiobook version. The narrator did a fine job with the "Caledonian" accents. Elijah Brody's voicing was very good--young, defiant, and sometimes bewildered. Simon Kovalic's was more problematic; not sure that a very proper British accent was the best choice for him.
Summary:The Caldedonian Gambit is easy and light enough to read at any time instead of having to wait for a time you're mentally prepared, but lumping the novel with similarly tonally light fare would belie the immense respect Dan Moren has imbued his first novel with: respect for his characters, respect for his universe, respect for the novel as a stand-alone story, and through these respect for his readers. The thoughtful effort is appreciated and has me hoping for a sequel.Detailed non-spoiler review:Broadly, this isn't a book that feels as if it's trying to change your worldview immensely (which is a thing I much appreciate and love in my fiction but am not always in the mood for). Sometimes you want to be able to really relax with a book without feeling as if you're also lowering your standards for writing, world cohesion, or depth of characters. Not every interaction, adventure, or phase of our real lives contains a tectonic shift in how we see the world–but ideally we're always actually paying attention to the world, aware of nuance, and challenged at least lightly. That's the balance Dan strikes with The Caledonian Gambit. His world is easily accessible, whether or not you're a big consumer of science fiction, but uses a different cultural basis for the place we're introduced to than I'm used to (while making it believable!). The book introduces a few concepts important to the world-building for what will hopefully turn into a successful series of novels in a way that makes this distinctly far future while retaining a degree of credibility as a realistically possible future that both less thoughtful and more dramatically alienating science fiction tend to lose. The characters all behave in ways that make sense in any given situation for their particular backgrounds and established traits. Often to drive some significant point home (the struggles of PTSD, drug abuse, racism, sexism, any other issue some people experience and many don't) writers of novels across the entire quality spectrum often fall into the trap of centering an entire novel or major character around a single defining characteristic, turning them into caricatures instead of people. Dan doesn't tip into that all-too-common well, though. The characters feel like real people, well grounded, with various histories and experiences that are pointed out without bludgeoning you over the head. As mentioned in my summary, all this speaks volumes about the respect Dan gives to fiction, to fiction consumers, and to the writing process and his desires for his own writing.Aside:I went through The Caledonian Gambit simultaneously via audiobook and paperback, switching between the two when necessary. I'd recommend either based on your preference, but have some thoughts on the experience. Reading paper is certainly faster and preferable much of the time for me, though certainly less convenient. While the audiobook performance during normal narration isn't among the strongest I've heard, and some of Dan's appropriate and enjoyable usage of italics/emphasis to offset internal monologue versus narration is less effective in audio form, one major benefit to switching back and forth was how helpful the audio was for understanding pronunciation on brief non-English / heavily-accented portions of the story. About 3/4 of my "read" was via audio form due to my circumstances (listening during commutes) and I found that the visual reading portions were much more enjoyable than they would have otherwise been as a direct result–I could read parts I would hesitate on comfortably and feel I was getting the experience I was meant to have.
I'm not sure if I read it somewhere in a review here, or if it was on a podcast episode about this book, but when I try to explain what this science fiction novel was about, it's about going home. Sure, there's your standard science fiction elements (starfighters, wormhole transit, expert computer hackers), but they all take a back seat to a down-home, good story about two brothers.Caledonia—the planet most of the action takes place on—is in fact just a science fiction Scotland and our protagonist, Eli Brody, left that backwater nine years ago. There's guilt, a Civil War-esque battle between brothers taking opposite sides in a universal conflict, and that's before you even get into the Cold War-style plot of intrigue and espionage.The Caledonian Gambit is one of the most accessible science fiction novels I've read in a long time. No obtuse made up terms, no astronomical physics that makes your head-spin, no weird takes on alien bureaucracy, just an honest to goodness story of a boy coming home from war and finding his home, and he himself, has changed.Read this book.
I've followed Dan in his tech journalism career for many years. I especially enjoy listening to him on podcasts, whether the techy kind or the geeky culture kind. He's got a great humor and wit. And that translates to his fiction. This was veritable Dan as I know him from listening to him. This adventure was a fun read and I think was a solid first publication. The sarcasm, quick wit, and heavy Star Wars influence were all expected and delightful. Congratulations!
Start with a hair-raising space battle only a stone's throw from a wormhole. Take a shattered man and force him into an intelligence operation against his own family. Now, unfold the story in an occupied world where the characters can hope (at the best) for ambivalence but must be prepared for hostility. (By chapter 3, the reader should just turn off their phone and finish reading to the end because let's face it you're not going to be able to put the book down anyway.)This novel reminds me of real life: 1) A lot of events are unfolding, but you are left guessing what it all means 2) There are lots of fascinating characters around, but you can't really tell which are villains and which are heroes 3) Worrying about the future is pointless, spend that energy making sure you are strapped in.The book resonated strongly with me and I believe that most readers of the genre will find it well worth the time.
