His no-fluff book brings a systematic and analytical approach to the ACT essay that cuts straight to the heart of what the essay graders want. It even allows illiterate monkeys like me a chance to do well. On my first attempt of the ACT essay I could not even string together a cohesive argument let alone finish a two and a half page essay. Nelson Phu gives you a template to follow and refine as well as some examples to memorize and expand upon. After memorizing the meat of your essay, the work required on your part is to practice figuring out which examples you will use in order to answer the question in the prompt. I have a plethora of things I can list off in terms of criticizing the entirety of having writing on standardized testing. With the ACT, a few years back, they allowed students to pay to have their essays graded by new readers. This service was discontinued after ACT realized that their credibility was under scrutiny by students and colleges because so many scores improved drastically using this service. ACT Writing does not reflect on your writing abilities, but rather, if you are able to fit their formulaic style. This book is a life saver. It tells you exactly what you need to know and how to achieve that high score. I scored an 11 following this book. Worth every penny.
Approach (memorize examples and bend them to fit the prompt) did not appeal to my daughter at all. We found other resources instead.
When I first ordered the ebook, I was skeptical about how much a few pages could help me. However, I was instantly drawn into the book in the first two short chapters. The author pulled me in with anecdotes that related to my struggles with the ACT essays(i.e. how he was a B student in HS English, but still managed to score a perfect 36!)The book includes a highly organized outline with college-level words implemented to help students who are poor essay writers(like me). Furthermore, it also provides easy- to-understand versatile examples, which I have been struggling to find on the internet. Moreover, when in case those fail to answer the essay prompt, Mr.Phu goes into detail about what to do from there. Although I have not taken the ACT yet, I strongly recommend purchasing this book as a must have!I only wish that Mr. Phu would create a ACT Reading book.
As an SAT/ACT Tutor, I'm always looking for new and effective sources to supplement my work. Author Nielson Phu admirably pares things down to the essentials in a very pragmatic way. This is just what time-starved students need. It doesn't eliminate the fact that students must try and practice the methods outlined, but it does give them very smart guidance on how to improve results.
