Oklahoma's Wichita Mountains are among my favorite in the southwest. Not only can you backpack just about anywhere here, but you can spend days and see absolutely nobody (the same is true for the Ouichita Mountains in Eastern Oklahoma). Most Wichita trails are moderately easy, with Elk Mountain being the steepest and having the best panoramic views, but there are numerous lengthier hikes that have just as much pay off. None of the hikes are particularly difficult to find and there are signs throughout the park telling you where you are, but once you hit the trail, its almost as if you're the only one there (excepting Mt. Scott and Elk Mt). In addition to the info in this book, the Wichita's are famous for their miles and miles of rock and boulder fields (especially near Quartz Mountain, which is not in this book at all), so if you have the spirit of adventure, get off the trails and just climb.The book isn't organized like other trail guides I've read, but is has b&w photos throughout t (no maps and no GPS coordinates). Also, this is a small book of only 55 pages and can be purchased at the Visitor Center for far less than it sells here (They also have maps they will give you for free).
I have spent 15 years of my 35 hiking in this area. There is no other place you can see such a variety of landscapes and terrain. I love that the Wildlife is such a huge part of the area, too. It doesn't matter if you are a hardcore hiking vet or someone that just wants to explore a little, this book will help you find the best area for your situation. I have girls that are 11 and 8. They just made their first hike to the Waterfall and loved it. Until then they loved the "spooky forest" and just hopping around on rocks. They each have a copy of this book and take turns picking our destination, so the instructions are that simple.
If you are planning on making a trip to the Wichita Mountain Wildlife refuge, this book is a must have. However, it can be purchased at the Visitors center there for about eight dollars. I suggest buying it there, I live 15 miles from this area I see them all of the time.
The best piece of literature to be used for finding numerous sites in the Wichita's. My famiy, friends and I have spent the past ten years, using this book, in discovering sites and areas that other people talk about but have never seen. Truly, the book to own, if one really enjoys the challenge of hiking the Wichita Mountains. People are always asking for the GPS posts, but I say, Go Find It, be creative, Use your imagination. We are Still looking for the Water Cave,. but this year is the year! Thanks Alan for the adventures!
Can't believe anyone would be paying $300 dollars for a paperback trails book!!!!
