These are astounding photographs of "The High Line" back when two men were first thinking of saving it as a park. Sternfeld is a master of landscape photography, and this is an amazing landscape - an abandoned elevated rail line on the west side of Manhattan. Over the years since it was abandoned, native plants began to grow by seeding themselves in amongst the rail lines. It is such a beautiful landscape, seen in the four seasons.
I didn't read what this book was about and I though it was from the highline as it is now. Not before. But it has great pictures. Overall a great book.
After reading the "High line; the Inside Story of New York City's Park in the Sky" being able to own Joel Sternfeld's book "Walking the High Line" is a real treat. Maybe, more so, because I purchased my copy on the High Line at their newly opened shop!When considering this book, readers should realize - this slim little photo book is a piece of history. Without it, the highlight might still be a dream.The collection of images - along with the essay by Adam Gopnik is a real treat, as his article in The New Yorker in 2001 is often said to have set off a mass appeal of support in the city for the project.The Highline is an extraordinary New York story, and these photographs were instrumental in cajoling the public to get behind a project that seemed so beyond far-fetched.Overall, "Walking the High Line" a great piece of documentation for any well-appointed New York City book collection.
First: to anyone giving this book negative reviews because it doesn't show the "new High Line," you should read the description of books you buy before purchasing them. Even more to the point, the new High Line park came to pass to some extent because of the photo in this book. It was a huge inspiration on many of the crucial people involved in the fight to preserve the High Line and make it what it is today. The large-format photographs here are gorgeous and purposeful, a fantastic example of the power of photography to make real-world change beyond the screen or the printed page.
Before the High Line became world famous well loved park, it was an abandoned railroad viaduct on the West Side of Manhattan. Joel Sternfeld's book captured what 20+ years of neglect will do to a rail line, showing how nature takes over. This book was shown to fundraisers to display what a magical place the High Line was. Without this book, the High Line we know and love might not have existed. A great snapshot of history.
So disappointed that 99% of this book is prior to the HighLine that exists now. Not even 1 photo of the completed project. Lots of history but nothing that showcases the outcome.
