Big disappointment. Wasted my money. I learned the hard way the difference between spiral bound and wire bound. This is a wire bound book which does not lie flat or spin around to become flat. I took the advice of other reviewers and removed the hard binding covering the wires which now causes the pages to fall out because the wires are open along the spine. It's also hard to use because the circumference of the wires is too large, thus making it difficult to write in the blocks close to the wires and I have small hands. It's too bad because I do like the page size, the puzzles are large and easy to see, and the paper suffers a lot of erasing without damage. The idiot publisher needs to make this a spiral bound book. Until then, I recommend you buy something else.
I love Sudoku books and the Will Shortz format in general and have purchased numerous iterations of the theme. This particular product has a large ring binding like a notebook rather than a case or 'perfect' binding. This would have been ok, but the book also has a hard cover which, during shipment in a bubble wrap plastic envelope, was mashed and the binding came away from the book entirely. I went to wrap it as a gift, opened the cover to write a greeting and the pages fell out of the cover. Had to find another gift quick: buyer beware.I kept the book for myself and designed a cover for it out of a couple sheets of colorful plastic, but it's very thick. Not something that will easily lie flat in its original binding in case you do your Sudoku at the kitchen table.One lovely thing about it is the different levels. I can do an easy one to warm up and graduate to a higher level if I want a challenge, but I'm disappointed that the item was un-giftable right out of the shipping container. Tough toenails!
This review is only about the format of the book, not the the content. The book description says "Sleek design with a covered spiral binding makes it easy to solve puzzles". If you really expect spiral binding you find in school notebooks, then you will be disappointed. I've never seen binding done this bad way in the past, the binding does not allow you to keep the book flat on the table nor flip pages 360 degrees.I really don't get why no publishers create nice binding and sell sudoku pages you can add or remove. How hard is that?
My idea of "Easy" Sudoku is not matching the authors idea of easy puzzles. I like the choice of levels as sometimes I'm tired and don't want to be challenged. The book isn't as easy to use as I pictured. I'm tempted to cut the back off so the spiral binding works better. The paper is excellent and book size and puzzle size are great. So maybe adding a "Super Easy" section for us wimps would be good.
I recently turned 30, so I made a list of 30 things to do while I'm 30. One of the things was to complete an entire book of sudoku puzzles.After reading the reviews of this book, I bought it. Other reviewers complained about the cover over the spiral binding. And yeah... it's annoying. But I cut the part of the cover that is over the spiral binding off and it lays perfectly flat.Check out the customer pics that I posted that shows it lying flat.As for the actual puzzles, I can't totally speak for the quality but I'm enjoying working through them. Right now I'm still in the Light and Easy section and they are... light and easy.I would definitely recommend this book to a friend.
I think this is a great gift for someone expressing an interest in sudoku. Graduated levels offer variety. I chose this over other books b/c of Will Shortz and my experience with his work. The reviews about the book not laying flat are true, but a simple cutting of the binding can solve that. The only issue I have is the number of puzzles of each skill level. There are 100 at each level, but for the person who "gets it," there may be wasted puzzles. After approx 5-10 puzzles on the easy level, one could move on to the moderate level and so on, leaving unneeded puzzles. I would have preferred a weighted approach, less easy puzzles and more hard puzzles to challenge the user a bit more. Still though, a better choice over other books.
If you are trying to find a sudoku book full of challenging puzzles, look elsewhere. Two hundred of the four hundred puzzles contained in this book are "Light and Easy" to "Moderate".
Yes, the puzzles are great. But it's also true that the awkward spine is a pain. I also trimmed off the cover that runs over the spine as another writer stated, which is an improvement. I enjoy Mr. Shortz puzzles, and I'm certain that he will address the issue.
