You are placed in the middle of these rich and complicated characters. You find yourself cheering for them, their full humanity on display. I would fully recommend to anyone looking to step outside their own experience.
Beatrice Brusic's experiences and life is rich and detailed as is her book. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone that is curious about the Andes region.
I expected more than the book delivered. I kept waiting for the "hook" and finally gave up. I read through to the end however, and feel it's an okay book and interesting story.
Very Good Book
I had to force myself to read it and finish her story. First she makes several mistakes in the translation to English, the spelling of places in Bolivia.I am from the same generation more or less. She blames Bolivia for her pain and difficult life; while it was her mothers choices that was to blame, specially the abuse the children had at her mothers hand.The mother was a poor mother, and like many abused children the author excuses her behavior.My best friend had a mother that lost everyting when she became a widow, but she went to ask for schoollarships for her 3 daughters, she knitted and supported them.All became professional women.Her descriptions of some people are very cruel, and despective.Her whole family was very disfuctional,her brother is the one that broke my hearth.Her description of Miraflores is wrong, it is a residential area, very pretty, she probably was living across the river, Villa San Antonio. The upbringing is what makes a person, not money, but care and love. One can change a first name, a surname,but the essence of where we came from is what makes us.I am a very proud Bolivian American. Maybe I was lucky to have the best parents, but also I had duties and obligations: first in my class,giving to others, and never forgetting where I come from.In College in the US I made presentations to teach the beauty and rich culture of Bolivia.I recommend to use a proof reader for any future books.Also to read other Bolivian authors that have books translated to English.
I enjoyed this book. It was a fun read and I got into the action right from the start. You will want to follow along on the journey for human growth and awareness. This book is for anyone who's ever had a dream and who is willing to work hard to obtain it. Stories about different cultures always interest me and this book is a treasure chest filled with interesting and unique experiences. The journey and quest for a better life is shown throughout the story and I felt empowered after I finished reading this chronicle.
