This book acts as a dictionary and a grammar book.This book is old. Many deaf instructors will tell you that. However, it is a great buy. If you are going to start studying ASL this is a good book to have. Nice build up with grammar in each lesson. Look at the lesson's words first and then read the grammar exercises. I really like this book and I find it a lot better than some more used classroom books such as "signing naturally". Also, I have to say that as a starting out student in ASL, some books are not ASL and the beginning students will make some mistakes. This is a great ASL book. One draw back is that the pictures are a little hard to interpret sometimes. As such, this is a book you would want to look up signs that you for got. And a book that you would want to have to supplement a classroom experience so that you could check to see if you have the signs correctly down.
This book is helpful for a course. It's definitely dated, but most of the signs are still the same, and our instructor does a good job of pointing out where the book is dated. Also, the first time I looked at the signs with arrows indicating movement, it was confusing. However, after learning signs in class and then looking at the book, it's easier to interpret signs I have to officially learned yet. I personally think this book is a good supplement to a course, but I am unsure how helpful it would be independently.
I started taking an ASL class a year ago. I love the fact that the book is spiral bound. it lays flat while I am practicing and my daughter likes to fold it back on it's self and hold it up like a clip board when she quizzes me on vocabulary. The class I take is in the Deaf community taught by the Deaf. There are a few words they disagree with but always explain they are regional differences or old ways of saying things that some people still use so they are good to know even if you don't use them.I've been caring the book around for the past year and it has held up very well. The illustrations are clear easy to understand.
This is not a great text book. It is OK as an adjunct to a class. You really can't learn sign language from a book, especially when all the diagrams are black and white sketches. ASL is by definition a language of movement. A DVD containing an illustration of the signs in video would be a tremendous improvement, if they'd thought to include one.The book structure is also a little confusing; the examples are not terribly helpful, particularly in early chapters. Overall, it is OK, but probably overpriced.
I was nervous of what it would look like or whether or not I'd receive it at all do to the cheap price.PROS: My book arrived 5days after purchase. There are no "wears or tears" beside looking agedCON: None (beside wishing it had prime lol)Experience: I am 1st time buyer but generally an avid reader "book worm".
The illustrations in the vocab aren't the best but then again they do recommend that you have all chapters signed in person, in a class. The explanations in the chapters leave much to be desired.
This is a good text that helps a fluent English speaker to learn basic sign language. It has useful explanations for grammar, sentence construction, and conversation guidelines. It doesn't answer every question one might have about sign language (what single reference could?), but it is a very good introduction to ASL. It is easy to follow, the exercises are very helpful, and the pictorials of the signs are, for the most part, very clear. Using this in conjunction with the Student Study guide and the ASL Dictionary has been sufficient for me to feel comfortable that I am learning ASL in such a way that I can truly USE and achieve FLUENCY in the language.
I didn’t like the layout at first, but it followed along with the ASL class my husband and I took and it is very good. I like the practice assignments at the beginning of each chapter.
