Bought this as a gift for a friend who was moving to TN with her children. I was impressed with the lovely illustrations. I also liked that the format of the book allows for its enjoyment by multiple ages; each letter of the alphabet has a more in-depth description that accompanies the associated word.
Informative, well-illustrated "picture book". In various libraries, I've seen it placed in the Children's Room or Juvenile Non-Fiction..I'm new to TN, and learned some interesting facts, and places I want to visit.
I love this book. I was a student of Mr. Shoulders back in the 80s at Ringgold. He was my favorite teacher and I have many found memories of his class.I am now a teacher myself in Germany and I read this to my students to share about the state I come from!
I LOVE these state books and so does my 2 1/2 year old. We live in Georgia, but were given the Oregon book from friends who live there when my son was a baby. He loved it so much and it contains great information about the state....so I looked for one from Tennessee (my home state) and Iowa (his father's home state) and was able to find both. I was thrilled with the books. I even learned things about Tennessee that I didn't know. The art is great for when they are young, but the book can grow to a teaching tool as they get older!
I tutor Japanese women who are in the USA for 4-5 years with their husbands who are employed by a local company. I give them each a copy of this book when they return home to help them remember some of the great things about our state. Both the book and the illustrations are great, and I hope that it is something they will share with others in Japan and hopefully get us some tourism from there!
Every child needs a copy!
If this book is any example of the other 49 state books, then I know children of all ages will enjoy reading about their country through a well illustrated and written book.
This book will be valuable for anyone interested in learning more about the state of Tennessee. Mr. Shoulders takes the reader from Beale Street to the Trail of Tears. The neat thing is that the rhyming verse will be enjoyed by toddlers, but people of all ages will appreciate the information in the sidebars. The illustrations are very good, especailly those dealing with nature. I highly recommend this book.
