From Goodreads:Moon Dragon, A Samantha Moon Vampire for Hire novelby J.R. RainTried to write a nice long review of this novel this a.m., but Firefox crashed half way through. I was traumatized. So, here I am back at it -- but I'll be more brief than if the crash had not happened!I've said before that J.R. Rain's writing has a way of keeping the reader involved and reading, beginning to end. This 10th novel in this series is no different -- I started it in the evening of October 17th and finished it in the evening of October 18th. I was absolutely not ready for it to end. This adventure delved deeper into Samantha's journey of self-discovery. More awareness of how she is changing, losing compassion, feeling aloof or isolated, and also more understanding of the entity which dwells within her, and how her control or non control of said entity is affecting her hold on her humanity. But we also see how her condition has affected her relationships with her family, with Kingsley, with Alison, with Fang, with the Librarian, and with the being into which she transforms, the great winged bat known as Talos. We see more of how her condition affects her work, what she has taken for granted, what she seems to be losing, what she seems to have forgotten. We see her struggles with her children as their own preternatural powers progress, and as they realize more and more about exactly what their mother is and what dangers she sometimes faces. And along with all of that, we see her undertake a case to find a werewolf, who just happens to be the current boyfriend of her late husband's mistress, before he kills another innocent, and how all that other stuff we're seeing almost costs her life and the life of the person she is trying to save. Lots and lots packed into a nice, efficient plot.Oh, and let's not forget that along the way she meets her dark master's long ago lover, the world's first vampire. And, because of that meeting, she realizes that she has powers of which she was not previously aware.I saw no grammar, proofing or editing errors. I saw nothing that stopped my progress in the storyline. In fact, the only thing I did see that I wondered about was the mention of "sherbet ice cream." I'm not an ice cream expert -- although I am a great fan -- but I do think that sherbet and ice cream are two very different products. Is there some hybrid I don't know about? If so, someone please clue me in!What I did see was more and more of the things that I like about Rain's style of writing. Lots of tongue in cheek humor, such as is found at the end of of chapter 13. Sam has just transformed into the Talos: "And spread my wings wide. Now, I thought, as I caught a hot gust of wind and sailed out over a dark valley, Where did I park my car...?"Rain also sprinkles pop culture references generously throughout his work. Of course, Sam's favorite, Judge Judy, appears on the first page (er, screen, as Rain's series is only published digitally) of the first chapter. He also mentions the TV series "The Vampire Diaries," and the original series of novels on which the tv series is based. That series was written by L.J. Smith, but that Rain has published a novel in, also. He also mentions the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Hunger Games Trilogy, and of course, that series' heroine, Katniss Everdeen. He mentions Hot & Now Pizza from Little Caesar's (a favorite around my house). And he also mentions other popular authors, such as Anne Rice, Poppy Z Brite and E.L. James. For me, these references simply cement the fiction to reality, and whether it's good style or or not, it makes me a happy reader. So, I'm looking forward to novel #11, Moon Shadow, which the end of this novel promises is "coming soon!" And, of course, the very title has Cat Stevens' song, Moonshadow, as my new earworm. As Rain is a prolific writer (check out his website at www.jrrain.com for his various series, stand alone novels, shorts and collaborations), I know I won't have to wait too long.

The focus of this short novel, the 10th in its series, is Samantha Moon’s humanity. The dark master, who came to possess part of her mind, body and soul when she was transformed into a vampire nine years ago, is now fighting for total possession. And Samantha is losing the battle. This is definitely not a standalone work. Rain references both events and persons from previous novels with little recap of circumstances or timing. Relationships between Samantha and the other characters are only tangentially explained. Therefore, being up-to-date in the series is a must for maximum enjoyment and to avoid that “do what?” feeling. The incident that jumpstarts the action is a meeting between Sam and her deceased husband’s former mistress, a meeting that has been requested by the mistress. As is often the case between a wife scorned and “the other woman,” this encounter starts off just a bit tense and defensive on both sides. But Nancy has some previous experience with monsters and the two are able to find a common ground and even a small measure of respect for each other within short order. As Nancy explains to Sam, the man she became intimate with, after Danny became a ghost, talks in his sleep. It appears that Gunther Kessler is a werewolf who spends his full moon change devouring his evening meal while it is still on the hoof and very much alive. And he likes that meal to be human and female. With barely a week to the next full moon, Nancy believes Sam is the best chance of stopping the man before another woman just simply disappears off the face of the earth.Sam agrees to take the case and begins tracking Gunther’s movements in an attempt to locate the hidey-hole where he stashes his entrée-to-be. But as the days pass, she begins to have ambivalent feelings about the need to find and stop Gunther. The thought of Gunther’s hunt and then the kill is becoming more exciting to her by the hour. She finds that she doesn’t really care about the fate of the victim anymore. And then she begins to think that people who put themselves in a position to be taken by the werewolf deserve to die anyway.J. R. Rain’s portrayal of Sam’s descent toward depravity and murderous madness is tension-filled and fearful. The once-in-a-while, un-characteristic action and the occasional, stray, uncharitable thought become a spate of these actions and thoughts. The spilled blood of an innocent seems, and is, inevitable. And you find yourself holding your breath wondering just how this descent into such viciousness and hate could possibly resolve itself in an acceptable and believable manner. So many characters from the previous novels have roles here in Sam’s fight for her humanity. Allison and the Librarian are cast as solid support along with Sam’s children while Kingsley and Fang are central to the denouement. Kingsley’s love is critical to Sam mentally while his knowledge of immortals aids her against Gunther. And Fang’s friendship, as well as his own recent descent into darkness, reaches past Sam’s anger and ennui, cutting to the real issue regarding her humanity. But the introduction of a new dark master into Sam’s life is crucial to Sam’s physical survival. And, it seems this same evil entity, perhaps the most evil and quite probably the very first of Sam’s species, could be essential to her existence, to her potential and to her power as a vampire. As such, Rain has laid out on the table some very enticing hooks for the next, or next several, entries in the series. And, by the way, the title to the book? Pay close attention, particularly toward the end, think “Talos,” and all will be revealed.

After taking a two-year break from fiction books, I am glad that I chose this novel when I was ready to escape from my nonfiction diet. The story line was quickly established so I could once again enjoy Sam's wit and the trials & tribulations of her kids and her extended family. Although it was a fast read, the character development made it easy to follow the story line and still not miss each quirky innuendo that the characters tossed out.It was good to see that Sam could still deal life or death scenarios and made the time to be a concerned but loving mom. It's interesting to follow the ups and downs in her kids' lives. She strikes a super balance that most moms can only wish they could achieve. It would be great if the listing on my Fire tablet and in the Kindle store would include the novels with the Book # preceding the Title. It was so time consuming having to open every title description to see the book # (which is cut off in the listings...) to determine the proper reading order. This also holds true for the reference to the other books by the author at the end of the novel and it does not include all of the books for the Samantha Moon series. So it was no help to this reader.Well, it's off to Book 11...
